You’re in a discussion about inappropriate speech when a student chimes in, ‘no matter what movie I go to, it’s not as bad as the cafeteria’. What do you do with that?
Here’s what I did with one of my kids. We took a movie that we’d recently gone to and attempted to record all the ‘outside-the-box’ words that we could remember. Then, we visited www.screenit.com and compared our list to the actual.
Wow
After experiencing the emotional appeal of a given movie, we’re often numb to some of its components. Conversely, if we look at the actual moral categories before making entertainment choices, we have the black n white in front of us. The naked reality of language- apart from its emotional entanglements- is often repulsive enough to make us look elsewhere.
