Sports have always grabbed me! From the days when I could write a blank check and expect my body to cash it to my current mastery of the remote, I’m caught in the frenzy. The language, the stats, the lingo, the rush — bring it on!
These days I’m buying a new book — The Reason for Sports — a dozen at a time and handing them out. Why? Because Ted Kluck, an award-winning sports writer and avid fan, knows the games inside and out. And, he knows a spade when he sees one. In a hilarious, yet compelling way he glorifies the outrageous spectacle of physical achievement while casting an irreverent eye on the posers who primp, dope, and mope their way through unprecedented wealth and opportunity. But there’s always a catch. “While I’ve never done the things that they have, exactly, I’ve thought about them, making me no less needy of God’s forgiveness than they are.”
Bottom line — his sports stories are awesome (including personal encounters with Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, Tony Dungy, and others), his Fantasy Football experiences are hilarious, and he skillfully uses the whole thing to reveal the power of the gospel. As a result, it’s a fantastic tool to give away.
In the words of ESPN’s Kenny Mayne, “This is not your normal sports book. Nor is it your normal Christian book. Here’s to some abnormal reading then for those seeking a different point of view.”
Take me to lunch and I’ll give you a copy. : )
